Abstract

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in critical care units worldwide. Early recognition and rapid implementation of evidence-based interventions are crucial for improving patient outcomes, with the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) providing globally recognized guidelines to standardize care. The role of critical care nurses in the timely identification, post-identification monitoring, and management of sepsis is proposed to be of great essence, but, by virtue of being at the bedside of patients 24/7 with clinical experience and expertise over the subject matter, critical care nurses are best poised to attribute. This paper presents a literature review of the role of critical care nurses in sepsis care with respect to early recognition, provision of interventions, SSC bundle adherence, multidisciplinary efforts, and support of patients.
